Report: Youth crime rises

JULY 13, 2000

A report released today by the Coalition for Juvenile Justice says crime rates for Indian youth are rising, just as they are falling throughout the country.

The report states that Indian youth are far more likely to be arrested for alcohol-related crimes than non-Indians. It says 3 percent of juveniles arrested for liquor law violations are Indian.

The report says youth crime is just one of many problems facing urban Indian and reservation communities.

The Coalition is a non-profit organization of state advisory boards created under a federal juvenile justice law and their report recommends expanding programs to fight Indian alcoholism, depression and gangs.

The report claims that Indian youth are "found too frequently in the back of squad cars, rather than in the front of classrooms."
