Town to consider stance on Indian issues

THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2001

Residents of the Connecticut town of Preston tonight will consider if they want their leaders to continue negotiating a land-into-trust settlement with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

They will also determine if they should continue opposing the pending federal recognitions of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. Finally, they will discuss the stance the town should take on general Indian issues.

The meeting comes as First Selectman Robert Congdon has expressed some sense of dissension with the leaders of North Stonington and Ledyard. The other towns, however, discount that Congdon is ready to jump ship.

Congdon on Tuesday announced his town will buy water from the Mashantucket Tribe. He called it a "win-win" agreement.
