THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2001

Attorney General John Ashcroft on Wednesday gave greater powers to the Justice Department to investigate the FBI.

The Inspector General can now freely conduct probes of the agency without having to get approval from Ashcroft or his top aide first.

Such a request had been previously denied by the Clinton administration under former Attorney General Janet Reno.

President Bush has nominated Robert S. Mueller to head the FBI, a ten-year term. His confirmation hearing has yet to be scheduled.
