The pending federal recognitions of two Pequot tribes in Connecticut were the subject of a technical assistance meeting conducted by telephone on Tuesday.

The meeting was held at the request of the state. The state is challenging whether or not the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe should have been granted preliminary federal recognition by the Clinton administration last year.

Two researchers who worked on the petitions of the tribes participated in the call. Virginia DeMarce and George Roth explained their methodology for examining the evidence submitted by the tribes, as well as interviews they conducted with tribal members.

The meeting continues today. It is the second the Bureau of Indian Affairs has held on the tribe's recognitions. The first was held last August.
