JUNE 30, 2000

Judging by local and state opinion, and some might say, lack of knowledge on Indian law, the Nell Jessup Newton, newly hired dean of the University of Connecticut School of Law, will have her hands full explaining concepts like tribal soveriegnty, federal recognition, land claims, and more to Connecticut officials and residents.

Newton is currently the dean of the University of Denver College of Law. She told The New London Day she won't be setting Indian policy in Connecticut, but help officials understand legal issues.

Governor John Rowland earlier issued a plea for experts in Indian law and sovereignty to come work or help out his state.
