Calif. tribal police gain support

JUNE 26, 2001 A California prison guards union and several lawmakers are supporting a bill that would expand the powers of tribal police on Indian reservations. Sponsored by Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar), the bill elevate tribal police forces, who currently act as peace officers, the same powers as municipal departments. California's status as a Public Law 280 state has limited justice systems on reservations. The state has criminal and civil jurisdiction in Indian Country under the law. Critics of the bill say citizens won't be able to have recourse against tribal police. Get the Story:
