JUNE 2, 2000

The state of Vermont will pay $60,000 for a one-third acre lot to a couple in Highgate. Abenaki remains were discovered there last month and Abenaki tribes and the state moved in to protect the remains. Vermont law makes disturbance of remains a felony.

The couple had refused to stop contruction on their property until a court ordered them to cease.

The state in the past has purchased land to protect Abenaki burials.
