JUNE 21, 2001

The Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma and various Kansas groups are preparing for a long battle in a land claims lawsuit the tribe filed earlier this week.

The tribe is claiming 2,000 acres of land in downtown Kansas City. Named as defendnats are various private property owners -- including General Motors, who owns a $1 billion car plant -- and local governments.

The tribe is claiming the land under an 1855 treaty. The tribe, like a number of others, was forced to move to Oklahoma.
