Three towns who are fighting the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on a number of issues said on Monday they can't accept a proposal the tribe is offering on trust land.

The tribe said it is willing to consult with the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston about pending land-into-trust applications. But the tribe said they won't relinquish altogether the right of future generations to seek trust land.

The towns said they can't accept such an offer. They want finality on the amount of acreage the tribe wants now and forever, basically pushing an argument which failed in federal court and appeals court.

The New London Day reports that a man was forcibly removed by the staff of Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) for an outburst he made against the tribe. Town and tribal leaders condemmned the man's actions and Simmons, who is organizing the talks between the sides, may have him banned from future meetings.

The tribe and the towns hope to meet again to discuss the issue.
