Nez Perce dispute heats up

JUNE 19, 2000

The jurisdictional dispute between the Nez Perce tribe and local governmental entities in the state of Idaho is becoming increasingly polarized over racial lines.

Formed in 1996, the North Central Idaho Jurisdictional Alliance is composed of local governments fighting the Nez Perce's assertion of jurisdiction on non-Indians. Last year, an essay described as racially inflammatory was written by a local city administrator and adopted by the organization.

Questions of who tribal and local officers can arrest, what laws and regulations apply to whom and under what conditions, and general Indian and non-Indian relations drive many debates around the reservation.

A conference at the University of Idaho will be held on Tuesday to discuss anti-Indian racism.
