US Oneida to hold state responsible

JUNE 16, 2000

The United States Department of Justice and the Oneida Nation of New York said they intend to hold the state of New York, and not the 20,000 landowners, responsible for any damages that may arise as a result of a lawsuit against the state.

In 1998, the DOJ asked District Judge Neal P. McCurn to add 20,000 landowners and the state to the tribe's lawsuit against the counties of Oneida and Madison. The judge has not ruled on that motion yet.

Negotiations over 250,000 acres of land illegaly transferred to state have been underway since 1985, when the tribe won a decision at the Supreme Court.
