JUNE 14, 2001 At the confirmation hearing for Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs nominee Neal McCaleb, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) told the tale of one group who sought recognition through Congress but failed. Campbell didn't name this tribe but said the committee held a hearing on a bill to recognize them. When he asked about their culture, language, creation stories and other information he thought anyone close to their roots should know, the group didn't have any answers. Instead, Campbell said, they offered the existence of their corporation as proof of the Indian identity. Suffice to say, the bill did not pass and Campbell said the group is still seeking recognition. Get the Story:
