Tribal police powers may expand

MAY 9, 2001 The California Legislature on Tuesday began review of a bill that would expand the powers of tribal cops on reservations. The bill would give tribes the option of having their police forces be state certified as peace officers. The designation would apply on and off reservation and the officers could carry weapons and work with other law enforcement agencies. California is a Public Las 280 state, where the state has criminal and civil jurisdiction over Indian Country. As a result, many tribes have no tribal courts or police forces. Get the Story:
