At least two authors disagree with the conclusions made by the author of Without Reservation. Jeff Benedict claims today's Pequot tribe have no genealogical ties to the historic one. Kim Isaac Eisler, author of a forthcoming book about the tribe, says "I don't think anyone can literally question, that Skip Hayward is a lineal descendent of Scattaup, the last chief of the Pequots." Eisler's book is expected in February 2001.

Another historian, Laurence Hauptman, believes Benedict's conclusions are flawed. He is the co-author of The Pequots in Southern New England: The Fall and Rise of an American Indian Nation.
