BIA questioned Pequots

MAY 3, 2000

The Bureau of Indian Affairs apparently questioned the tribal legitimacy of the Mashantuckets Pequot Tribal Nation before their 1983 Settlement Act which granted them federal recognition was passed. According to BIA documents, administrators were concerned about the lack of information in the Pequot's application for federal recognition. The Settlement Act created the boundaries of the Pequot reservation in addition to recognizing them as a tribe. The tribe was able to forego the BIA's recognition process.
