The State of Vermont continues to negotiate with a Vermont couple to purchase their quarter-acre plot after they had unearthed Abenaki remains during construction of a new house. A Superior Court in Vermont postponed a second hearing on Thursday.

The Vermont couple claim the Abenaki harrassed them and trespassed on their land. The Abenaki claim that they have been spiritually disturbed by the unearthing of these remains. The state has sent an archaelogist and two members of the Abenaki tribe to make sure that the remains are properly interred.

Intentional removal or excavation of remains in Vermont is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Abenaki remains have been found on other sites in the area, and the state has purchased those lands.
