MAY 23, 2001

A federal judge on Monday allowed the Brothertown Tribe of New York to join the Oneida Nation's land claim.

The Oneida Nation opposes the addition for fear it will bog down the case, which has been in the courts for more than 25 years now. The Brothertown Tribe, however, claims a 156-square-mile tract of land was illegally taken by the state.

The historic Brothertown Nation, which is composed of members of other tribes including the Mohegans, signed a treaty with the federal government. Some parts of the historic tribe have since moved to Wisconsin, although no Brothertown group is federally recognized.
