State seeks BIA meeting

MAY 23, 2000

The Attorney General for the State of Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, asked the BIA for more information regarding the preliminary recognition of the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Eastern Pequot Tribe.

Blumenthal has questions about the evidence of the ancestry of tribal members and he wants to know why such significance was placed on the continued existence of the Lantern Hill Reservation of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the state of Connecticut's recognition of the Eastern Pequot Tribe. He also wants to discuss the "Fourth Sunday" meetings the tribes cited as evidence for the continued political influence criterion.

The BIA has publicly stated that the incident in the 1970s that caused the formation of the two tribal groups weakens both tribes' applications for federal recognition and the BIA has urged them to reconcile. The BIA has not responded to Blumenthal's letter as of this week.
