MAY 17, 2001 An American Indian activist who was once sent to prison for holding a newspaper staff hostage was convicted of first-degree murder and shooting into an occupied building today in Robeson County in North Carolina. Eddie Hatcher on Wednesday told the jury he only wanted to be considered for first-degree, which could lead to his death. The jury returned its verdict after four hours of deliberation. Hatcher said he took the staff of The Robesonian hostage in 1988 to protest corruption. Get the Story:
