MAY 12, 2000 Three Connecticut towns have begun examining over 7,000 pages of BIA documents regarding the federal recognition of the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot and Eastern Pequot tribes. The documents are part of a Freedom of Information request the towns made regarding the BIA's preliminary approval of the two tribes. The lawyers oppose federal recognition of the tribes and hope they can find genealogical and other inconsistencies. The two tribes received preliminary recognition in March. The towns had earlier threatened to sue Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt over the decision. The towns have the ability to respond to the Department of the Interior and the BIA during a 180-day comment period before the Bureau makes its final determination of recognition status.
