MAY 11, 2001

Bills to remove the federal recognition process from the Bureau of Indian Affairs have once again been introduced in Congress.

Congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-Am.Samoa) has filed the House version. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) and Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, have filed the Senate version.

Both bills had been introduced last Congressional session, but failed to pass. Both create an independent commission that will decide on all petitions but differ slightly on details.
