A federal jury on Wednesday cleared Tyrone Takes The Knife of two counts of rape but convicted him of one count of witness tampering in a series of incidents which began at the Crow Fair on the Crow Reservation last summer.

Takes the Knife, 32, had been accused of raping his former girlfriend twice on August 19. His defense painted the 33-year-old woman as the abuser in their rocky relationship, saying she had been arrested for breaking his nose and sending him to the hospital.

The woman is being charged in Wyoming for allegedly trying to run him over, said the defense.

Takes the Knife did write letters to her while he was in federal custody. In one, he urged her to recant the story and gave her contact numbers at the US Attorneys Office and was convicted of witness tampering for this action.

He will be sentenced this August.
