The tribal council of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana on March 23 fired judge Calvin Wilson, a tribal member, because he allegedly handled election dispute cases improperly.

The charges against Wilson were brought by Clarice Wallowing Bull, the tribe’s assistant prosecutor who ran for a judgeship position last fall but failed. Subsequently, she and two others filed complaints about the election, saying proper background checks on candidates were not performed.

According to Wallowing Bull, Wilson didn't act on her case. So she took it to tribal council, who then voted to fire Wilson.

Wilson says the action by the council was a violation of separatio of powers. He won't vacate his position unless President Geri Small signs or vetoes the dismissal order.
