APRIL 24, 2001 Although Coeur d'Alene tribal members approved a proposal to pay council members a $65,000 yearly salary, debate is stirring as the Idaho tribe prepares for elections. Currently, only the position of Chairman is full-time and is paid. Council members, however, say their commitment is just as strong. Tribal members who attended a general meeting in March approved the plan. The council is expected to approve it. Chiarpah Matheson, a candidate for council against two incumbents, doesn't believe the position should be paid. No debates on the issue have yet been scheduled. Get the Story:
