Mille Lacs:
Challenger Melanie Benjamin received 42 percent of the vote, compared to the 33 per cent of notable incumbent Marge Anderson. Anderson has led her tribe to increased economic success, although challengers questioned accountability.

White Earth:
Former tribal chairman Darrell "Chip" Wadena, subject of an HBO documentary "Super Chief" was barred from running for re-election. He was convicted of corruption charges. Challenger Doyle Turner received 45% of the vote, compared to incumbent John Buckanaga with 37%.

The communities of Fond du Lac, Leech Lake, and Fois Borte also held primaries. Grand Portage did not hold one, with only two candidates running for chair.

The top two finishers in the primary elections qualify for general elections in June.
