Towns question need for land
APRIL 18, 2001

The leaders of three Connecticut towns on Tuesday made their first response to a settlement proposed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

In a letter to the tribe, the leaders of Ledyard, Preston and North Stonington want the tribe to justify why it needs additional trust lands. The towns also want to know if the tribe will agree to place an upper limit on the amount of land it wants placed in trust and whether the tribe will limit future uses of that land.

The towns want the tribe address these issues before the next public meeting between the two parties. The towns have opposed attempts by the tribe to seek trust lands and argue the financially successful tribe doesn't need more land.
