APRIL 18, 2001 Leaders of three Connecticut towns on Tuesday defended paying more than $20,000 to two former Bureau of Indian Affairs researchers who are helping them fight the federal recognition petitions of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. The towns had earlier declined to acknowledge or disclose how they are spending taxpayer's money on the issue. But The Norwich Bulletin obtained documents on the towns' spending. The towns say there is no conflict of interest in their decision to hire Kay Davis and Michael Lawson. Both worked directly the recognition petitions of the two tribes but have since left the Bureau. The towns also it is not hypocritical to hire the workers while at the same time complaining that former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover has gone to work on behalf of tribes. Get the Story:
