The Montana State Senate on Thursday voted 44 to 4 to endorse the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe's bid for federal recognition.

The tribe was extended preliminary recognition last year. They had been seeking recognition for more than 100 years, after Chief Little Shell refused to sign a treaty which would have paid the tribe only 10 cents per acre of land.

The dissenting senators said the tribe shouldn't be subjected to federal Indian policies they termed flawed.
