MARCH 30, 2001 A federal judge in Connecticut on Thursday allowed two Pequot Tribes to intervene in a lawsuit which aims to rescing their bids for federal recognition. The Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe had sought to join the lawsuit, which was filed by Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in January. Blumenthal and the leaders of three towns claim the Bureau of Indian Affairs extended preliminary recognition to the tribes without following proper guidleines. The tribes share the Lantern Hill Reservation. The reservation was created in the 1600s and the tribes are recognized by the state as one tribe. Both received preliminary recognition in March 2000.
