MARCH 28, 2001

The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard oral arguments on the legality of a tax imposed on non-Indian business transactions by the Navajo Nation.

An attorney for the company challenging the eight percent hotel tax said it should be struck down or else tribes everywhere could end up instituting more taxes. The tribe's Attorney General said it had the right to impose the tax because of the services provided to the hotel and trading post.
