MARCH 15, 2001

Two men who want to intervene in the Oneida Nation's land claim against the state of New York on Wednesday made their case to join the long-running dispute.

The men are part of the Brothertown Indian Nation of New York and say their land was illegaly sold to the state of New York. But the tribe is not federally recognized and the Oneida Nation said they are only seeking to join the lawsuit to force the government into recognizing them.

The Brothertown Tribe is an amalgamation of other tribes including members of the historic Pequot tribe of Connecticut. Tribal leaders signed a treaty with the federal government along with the Oneida Nation and descendants now live in Wisconsin and other areas.

The Wisconsin-based tribe is currently petitioning for federal recognition.
