MARCH 1, 2001

The Nebraska Legislature's Judiciary Committee on Wednesday approved a bill returning jurisdiction of some criminal and civil offenses to the Santee Sioux Tribe.

The state had assumed jurisdiction over all Indian Country from the federal government in Nebraska through Public Law 280. The Omaha and Winnebago tribes have both been restored some jurisdiction.

Santee Sioux Chairman Roger Trudell said restoring jurisdiction to the tribe would help authorities react quicker to crimes on the reservation.
