FEBRUARY 6, 2001

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and the County of Cherokee on Monday moved forward with a proposal to build a new jail together.

Cherokee Nation tribal Councilor John Ketcher attended a meeting yesterday in which Cherokee County commissioners gave Undersheriff Dan Garber the approval to form a committee to look into the situation. Overcrowding and declining health standards at the county's jail are cited as factors for going ahead with the proposal.
