Tribe supports state tax bill

JANUARY 31, 2001

John McCoy, executive director of government affairs for the Tulalip Tribes of Washington, on Tuesday testified in support of a bill that would require willing tribes to collect state tax on items they sell to non-tribal members.

The tribe already has a compact to collect and hand over state tax on sales at its tribally-owned smoke shop. The bill would redirect that tax back to essential tribal governmnet services.

But other tribes who allow individual tribal members to sell goods say they might not benefit from such a practice.
