Tribe may keep historic documents

DECEMBER 8, 2000 Connecticut authorities have determined that papers owned by the state but now in the possession of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation were acquired legally and that the tribe can keep them. The tribe has said they were willing to return them if the state could guarantee their preservation. Often, Indian-related documents are stolen or not well-handled and some officials have gone so far as to suggest members of local tribes were responsible. But in the case of the Mashantucket, the state has determined no criminal activity has occurred. Detective Nicholas DeJohn, however, said Attorney General Richard Blumenthal could try to recover the documents through a civil suit. Get the Story:
