Nipmuc Nation now cautious

The Chief of the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts on Wednesday cautiously awaited yet another review of the last-minute decision to recognize the tribe.

The tribe's recognition is on hold because the transition team of the President George W. Bush administration wants to review decisions not yet published in the Federal Register. The team on Saturday asked all agency heads to hold back any pending decisions so that Bush appointees could review them, although The Boston Globe says it was due to the "politics of casino gambling."

Citing a source within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said the decision to recognize the tribe was made after research staff recommended against it. The Globe, citing unidentified sources, says it verified the negative recommendation.
