Land claims might still involve landowners

JANUARY 24, 2001 Despite a pledge made by the Department of Justice last week vowing not to sue private landowners in Indian land claims cases in New York, tribes and others in the state say it might not affect future disputes. Tribes in the state say they could continue to name private landowners in actions, but only as a procedural step. Governor George Pataki, who criticized the Department for naming landowners in the Oneida Nation case, said the government's pledge only becomes reality when they say it in court. Get the Story:
