Tribe offers foe $3M

JANUARY 24, 2001 The Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut on Tuesday voted to give one of its primary foes $3 million over a ten-year period should they gain federal recognition and open a casino. The tribe has offered the money to the town of North Stonington unconditionally. The tribe says it is offering it under good faith but one town official downplayed the action. The tribe was extended preliminary recognition in March 1999. Comments on their petition were extended until March of this year and will be followed by a response from the tribe. The BIA will then issue a final decision on the tribe which will become effective 90 days after being published in the Federal Register, barring any legal challenges. Challenges are usually heard by the Interior Board of Indian Appeals (IBIA) but the federal court system in Washington, DC, also hears the cases. Get the Story:
