DECEMBER 21, 2000

The Jicarilla Apache Reservation in New Mexico officially increased in size on Tuesday with the taking of 5,680 acres of land into trust.

The tribe hopes to use the land for housing and an elementary school. They bought it from a local family in 1996 and at first saw opposition to their decision to seek trust status for the land.

The county of Rio Arriba later dropped their opposition because of the land is contiguous to the existing reservation.
