JANUARY 19, 2001

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is expected today to issue a decision on whether or not to extend federal recognition to two Nipmuc bands in Massachusetts, having alerted offficials there of a decision before Saturday.

The two bands were expected a decision in December but Kevin Gover, the now-departed head of the BIA, recused himself from the process, citing conflict of interest claims.

The bands are considered fractions of the Nipmuc Tribe.
