JANUARY 17, 2001

A report by the Washington state police shows that Native Americans, African-Americans, and Hispanics pulled over by police are more than twice as likely to be forced to submit to a search than whites.

Yet of all drivers pulled over and searched, police found contraband on a larger percentage of whites than non-whites. State troopers found contraband on 33 percent of whites searched compared to 22 percent for minorities.

Minorities were 16 percent of all traffic stops but 26 percent of all searches, according to the report.

A similar analysis conducted by The Minneapolis Star Tribune shows that Native American and minority drivers in the city were twice as likely as white to be booked into jail. Overall, 52.6 percent of those stopped by police were minorities.
