NOVEMBER 3, 2000

A group of residents of the Connecticut town of North Stonington don't support the anti-Pequot views of their town's leadership and are pushing for better understanding with local tribes.

Organized by a couple of residents, the group wants the town to negotiate with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The town oppose attempts by the tribe to expand their reservation.

They also want the town to talk more with the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes. The town opposes their federal recognition.

Mediation with the tribes was suggested by a paid consultant for the town. But the town has an anti-annexation ordinance and don't want to negotiate with any tribe.

Along with the towns of Ledyard and Preston, the three have also rejected a request by Representative Sam Gejdenson to mediate with the Mashantucket tribe.

A poll commissioned by The New London Day showed that outside of the immediate area of the tribes and the towns, voters don't consider Indian issues important.
