NOVEMBER 13, 2000

The state of Minnesota won't appeal a 1996 ruling which upheld off-reservation hunting, fishing, and gathering rights of three Ojibwe bands.

Meetings between the Fond du Lac and the state on resource allocation will begin soon. Along with the Grand Portage and Bois Forte bands, the Fond du Lac were operating under a 1988 agreement with the state.

But the Fond du Lac said that agreement infringed on their treaty rights and sued the state.
