New Mille Lacs leader addresses tribe

JANUARY 10, 2000 Melanie Benjamin, the recently elected leader of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota, gave her first "State of the Band" address on Tuesday. In her speech, Benjamin challenged tribal members to overcome drug abuse and violence and to help spur economic growth. She also encouraged them to participate activiely in tribal affairs. Benjamin in June unseated long-time leade Marge Anderson, who has been praised throughout Indian Country for her economic development initiatives. Get the Story:
