Another Pequot tribe to petition

OCTOBER 30, 2000 Another Pequot tribe plans to petition the Bureau of Indian Affairs for acknowledgement, according to its leader. The tribe, called the Western Pequot Tribal Nation, says its members are descended from the historic Eastern and Western Pequot tribes, as well as the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island. Some are eligible for membership in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, already federally recognized, but can't be enrolled because the tribe closed its membership rolls in 1996. One of the federal acknowledgement guidelines states that a petitioning group can't be an amalgamation of already acknowledged tribes. The Narragansett are federally recognized. Get the Story:
