Talks with Pequot tribes urged
OCTOBER 27, 2000

An independent consultant hired by the Connecticut town of North Stonington is recommending that it talk with three Pequot tribes in order to address zoning and planning isssues.

Along with the towns of Ledyard and Preston, the towns and the state oppose the expansion of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. They also oppose the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes.

They recently lost a lawsuit against the Department of Interior, whom they believe isn't allowed to take additional land into trust for the tribe. The towns are also awaiting a final decision on the federal recognition of the two tribes and again asked the BIA to recuse Kevin Gover from the decision making process.
