THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2001 In documents filed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut accuses a rival of "blackening" an Eastern Pequot ancestor. Racism is at the heart of the dispute between the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the rival Paucatuck Easter Pequot Tribe, say researchers. The rival groups are actually parts of the same tribe, they add. Both tribes have received preliminary acknowledgment. A final determination, ordered by a federal court, is expected to be issued by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb by the end of the year.
