WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2002

Peru's Supreme Court on Tuesday heard arguments in the case of former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student Lori Berenson, convicted of aiding separatist rebels try to take over the nation's Congress.

Berenson, who is serving out her 20-year sentence in prison, did not appear before the five judges. Her attorney asked the court to overturn the punishment.

Beresen was convicted of aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in a failed plot to take over Congress. The movement is named for Tupac Amaru, an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s.
