U.S. charged in genocide suit

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2001 A class action lawsuit was filed in federal court on Thursday on behalf of the indigenous people of the Chagos Islands. The suit accused the federal government of genocide, torture and relocation of the indigenous residents of the island. Asking for millions in damages, the Chagossians say the military forced them off the island in the late '60s and early '70s. A British court has ruled in favor of the Chagossians. In November 2000, the High Court said the British government illegally removed the Chagossians from the island to make way for the U.S. military base. Get the Story:
