Tribes seek end to Congress

AUGUST 3, 2000

Leaders of tribal nations in Ecuador were accompanied by protesters in their call for a referendum that could end Congress and keep the sucre as the country's currency.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nations delivered 1.5 million signatures calling for a referendum. Ecuadorean law requires 600,000 signatures.

The Confederation has been successful in recent months in battles against the government. Many indigenous citizens of the country don't want to see the sucre exchanged for the US dollar, saying the change will hurt the poor.
